(Quality) Control

When you have finished writing your audio description, complete the following self-check. Ask yourself, is my audio description:

  • free of grammatical and spelling errors,
  • accurate,
  • objective,
  • clear and easy to understand,
  • reasonably brief,
  • complete (contains all required components), and
  • engaging?

Then conduct the following tests (Universal Design Education Online Website, 2004):

  • Self-check – Does reading your description aloud give you a mental image similar to the one described?
  • Peer-check – Read your description to someone unfamiliar with the visual image.  Then show the listener the image and ask how the image they imagined was different from the visual image.

Even better, when time and availability permit, reach out to the local blind and low vision community for feedback regarding the effectiveness of the audio descriptions.
