CAMP + U Postsecondary Training on Inclusive Practices Facilitation Guide
Overview
This guide is provided to assist facilitation of three PLC sessions to accompany the CAMP + U Modules.
It is recommended that PLC session 1 takes place after Module 1: “U”.
PLC session 2 takes place after Module 2 & Module 3: covering content of Module 2: Connection and Module 3: Agency.
PLC session 3 takes place after Module 5: covering content of Module 4: Mastery and Module 5: Purpose.
Timeframe and Modality
PLC sessions are designed for approximately 60 minutes, but can be modified to meet the needs of your campus and can take place in-person, synchronously online or hyflex. Each PLC session is designed to present a brief recap of the module concept and guiding questions, then discuss the Key Assessment within the module. This should take approximately 35 minutes to complete. The remainder of the time can be customized to the campus related priorities, discussion of the accompanying book recommendations or the open ended prompts to explore what additional key takeaways the participants would like to discuss.
Pre Requisites
Facilitators should be familiar with the content of the CAMP + U content and assessments Facilitators should be skilled in using zoom platform to admit participants, use breakout rooms, monitor the chat and navigate other zoom related tools (whiteboard, poll etc. as necessary).
Resources
The following readings are recommended for enhancing the PLC discussion:
- Diversity and Inclusion in the College Classroom | Faculty Focus: Online Downloadable
Paperback Copy of Academic Ableism | University of Michigan Press by Jay T. Dolmage
Synchronous Session 1 - Module 1
Time: 60 min
Facilitator opens zoom meeting.
Introductions and logistics are shared (5 min).
Facilitator says:
We began with exploring Module 1 which focused on the “U” in Camp U. U stands for a university as a place of knowledge-building and discovery, fostered by a unique sense of place. “U” also represents “us” and the ways in which we are committed to equity, inclusion, belonging, and a change for better outcomes for our students.
The Guiding Questions that structured this module were:
- Who are my learners, and how do they learn best?
- Who am I, and how do my beliefs, values, and biases impact the teaching and learning environment?
- Who is the university, and how do my instructional practices align with the mission and vision of the university?
Let’s discuss prompt one (10 min for each prompt, total of 30 min.)
Facilitator says:
Next we will discuss what additional issues this module raised for you. (20 mins)
Closing: Facilitator reminds the group of the PLC schedule and next steps. (5 min)
Synchronous Session 2 - Module 2 & 3
Time: 60 min
Facilitator opens zoom meeting.
Introductions and logistics are shared (5 min).
Facilitator says:
These Modules focus on Connection and Agency.
Connection was defined as a sense of belonging through strong relationships that promote acceptance, connection, support, and empathy in their learning environment.
The guiding questions that structured the module on Connection were:
- What does it mean to design for belonging?
- How can paying attention to belonging help us as we design new experiences and ways of learning together?
Agency is one’s capacity and habit to form and act on intentions.
The Guiding Questions that structured the module on Agency were:
- What learning conditions have we created that either inhibit or promote student success?
- What kind of relationships increase engagement and ownership of learning for students – especially those who have not been successful in schools and/or have a history of negative experiences?
- What does it mean to build a Learning Partnership between teachers & students? How can we get started in building that partnership?
Today we will explore the Key assessment at the end of the Module and leave time to discuss any key insights that this module raised for you.
The Key Assessment in Connection asked you to: Review this HGSE Handout on structured protocols for small group work and share (1) two protocols that are new to you that you will try out in your classroom this semester, and (2) why you selected these.
The Key Assessment in Agency asked you to identify an assessment that will occur in your course and submit a student self-assessment version of this assignment.
We will break out into 2 groups where you can choose which assessment you want to discuss more with your small group.
Facilitator closes breakout rooms after 30 min.

Welcome back! Today we will explore the modules you explored on Mastery and Purpose.
In these modules mastery means engagement with rigorous content, demonstration of its understanding, and critical reflection on new material.
The guiding questions that structured this module were:
- In what ways can UDL impact the postsecondary classroom?
- How can UDL be applied to the postsecondary classroom to help students demonstrate their mastery of learning goals?
- What are some potential barriers to consider in order to fully implement UDL?
In the module on Purpose we learned that purpose refers to students’ understanding of personal values and their relationship to learning and to long-term goals.
The Guiding questions that structured this module were:
- How can I ensure my diverse learners transfer knowledge and skills to the real world?
- How can I identify and remove barriers to experiential learning experiences for students?
Today we will explore the Key assessment at the end of the Module and leave time to discuss any key insights that this module raised for you.
The Key Assessment in the module on Mastery asked you to select a course syllabus and share some revisions you made based on what you learned from this module.
The Key Assessment in the module on Purpose asked you to review the following experiential learning experiences and select one experience to identify potential barriers to learning and accessibility and solutions.
We will break out into 2 groups where you can choose which assessment you want to discuss more with your small group.
Facilitator closes breakout rooms after 30 min.
