On Saturday, February 23, 2019, Hawaii Department of Education faculty began their first in-person professional development class with Project Hoʻokuʻi III: Na Kumu Alakaʻi on the island of Oʻahu. The island of Oʻahu is fittingly known as “the gathering place.” The day was filled with activities to better serve Hawaii’s keiki toward transitioning from secondary education towards post-secondary education. Included in the project schools were faculty from Kealakehe High School, Ke Kula O Ehunuikaimalino, Kanu O Ka Aina, Keaʻau High School, Hawaii Academy of Arts & Sciences, Ke Kula ʻO Nāwahīokalaniʻōpuʻu, Molokaʻi High School, Lānaʻi High School, Farrington High School, Hana Elementary & High School, and Kapaʻa High School.  Project partner, Hawaiʻinuiākea, School of Hawaiian Knowledge, Dean Jon Osorio began the morning by leading the protocol.  Dr. Willy Kauai, Director of Native Hawaiian Student Services, inspired the project faculty teams by sharing the history of the University, the challenges and strides of Native Hawaiian students in higher education, and the goals for the future.
