The Hawaii Visitable Housing Coalition is prCartoon Wheelchair User at Foot of Steep Stairs to Door Open to Blue Skyomoting a big increase in Hawaii’s stock of housing that is both affordable and accessible to people who have difficulty moving around. Homes that are accessible at a basic level are often called “visitable” because they allow people who use wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, or canes to more easily visit friends and neighbors, thus avoiding social isolation. Visitable housing is also appreciated by seniors and their families because it may allow them to “age-in-place” in their own homes without the need for expensive modifications, or perhaps care home placement, as they develop age-related health problems.

A great need for more visitable housing in Hawaii was identified by a study conducted by our Center on Disability Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, entitled Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice with a Focus on People with Disabilities (click on title to download report).
