Waipahu Community Learning Centers

Learning Center written in a thought bubble

Project Dates: 2004 – 2005

Funded by: OESE via MOA from State Department of Education

About

The project is in a low income, multi-ethnic community, with much below educational attainment in schools and among adults. The overall goal is to establish and improve learning opportunities in school settings but outsource regular school hours in academic, artistic, enrichment, health, and cultural activities, with full inclusion. Objectives include the long term participation by more than 1,000 children and adults, implementation of the ACE Reading Program with more than 2 grade levels (av) improvement, and the production of a coordinators Manual and final (4 yr.) report to the federal funding agency. Unusual features include 95% ethnic minorities, 60% of whom speak a language other than English at home.
