BEAM Two-Step Identification Procedure

Student Identification Steps

Project BEAM will select student participants with the following two-step procedure:

STEP 1

  1. At the end of school year, participating schools will identify all Native Hawaiian, Native American, Pacific Island, or Hispanic 7th or 8th grade students who have received a grade of B or better in math, before taking algebra.

STEP 2

  1. Participating schools will let the project know the number of students who met step 1.
  2. School staff will provide each student identified in Step 1 with an “eligibility packet.” The eligibility packet will contain three assessments- 1) the Multiple Intelligences Developmental Assessment Scales (MIDAS); 2) the Scales of Identifying Gifted Students (SIGS)-parent rating scale; and 3) SIGS- teacher rating
    1. MIDAS will be completed by the student.
    2. SIGS-PARENT will be completed by one of the students’ parents and/or guardians.
    3. SIGS-TEACHER will be completed by a math teacher or a teacher who knows the student well.
  3. Students will return the completed packets to their schools.
  4. A school staff member will replace students’ real names with codes. Note that we will not have any access to students’ real names at this stage.
