Self Determination Training

No-cost self determination training available for individuals, families, educators, and professionals!

The concept of Self Determination has been a stated focus in the education and support professions for decades. Yet there are very few educational opportunities for individuals, families, and professionals to actually learn about Self Determination. The Hawai‘i Department of Health, Developmental Disabilities Division has partnered with the University of Hawai‘i Center on Disability Studies to provide no-cost Self Determination (SD) statewide training opportunities for educators, agency personnel, waiver providers, families, community members, and people with disabilities.

Our “Keys to Self Determination” training sessions are designed to increase knowledge, awareness, and recall of the components and skills of Self Determination. We hope that through this initiative, that our trainees will develop a “self determination lens” that will inform their personal outlooks and support provision activities. These sessions also offer useful tools to support individuals with ID/DD and other disabilities to envision, prepare for, and work to realize self determined visions for their lives. SD training opportunities are also available for students, parents, and others.
