Tips for Supporting Reading Skills at Home

Family Resource

Studies that occurred in classroom settings have provided four recommendations for evidence-based tips to support reading skills at home. This document summarizes the evidence, and provides tips and details on how the school staff implemented these practices to have families help support reading skills at home.

These strategies include:

  • Have conversations before, during, and after reading together
  • Help children learn how to break down sentences into words and words into syllables
  • Help children sound out words smoothly
  • Model reading fluently by practicing reading out loud to your child
