The Hawai’i Statewide Family Engagement Center (HFEC) is pleased to present a mini professional development series to showcase evidence-based family engagement programs and strategies to schools and complex areas across Hawai’i.

This presentation was an overview of why Micronesians are moving to the State of Hawai’i; the obstacles they have to overcome; how they perceive the importance of the extended family and effective strategies schools and communities can use to build effective and trusting relationships.
Objectives
Participants will: (1) Enhance their knowledge on how the Compact of Free Association between the United States and the Republic of the Marshalls, The Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of Palau is impacting immigration into Hawai’i; (2) Hear the major obstacles Micronesian families are facing as they arrive in Hawai’i, including assimilation issues; (3) Enhance their knowledge on Micronesian definitions of family and how that impacts engagement; and (4) Hear strategies on building trusting relationships with the Micronesian communities.
