About 7 million Americans experience vision impairment, affecting their lives but also those around them, including family and friends. When a person is left out of an experience, for instance because of vision loss, that exclusion not only affects the person involved but also the companions of that person as well as the larger community; which suffers when significant segments of the population are left out of important societal conversations. Besides inherent ethical, moral, and economic motivations, the National Park Service also has supported this project in response to legal mandates as well as internal management policies and initiatives, such as the 2015-2020 “All In!” accessibility campaign, as well as federal laws such as Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act that address the imperative for equivalent access by persons with disabilities to its facilities and learning materials.
