Student Mentorship

Are you an undergraduate or graduate student and familiar with Native Hawaiian culture and college life? Project Hōkūlani is looking for mentors who will work with high school students in SY2021-2022.

Earn $250 per month!

TIME COMMITMENT:

· Approximately 130 hours for a program year (from August 2021 to May 2022)

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Commit to at least one program year of involvement. Two program years of involvement is preferred.

· A program year consists as follows:
     · A kick-off meeting in August
     · 2 Saturdays per month between August – May (approximately 20 classes)
     · Each class is approximately 4 hours long (including set-up and clean-up time)
     · 16 classes will be held at one of the project’s satellite campuses
     · 4 classes will be held at the students’ internship site. A mentor will accompany the students to their internship site as a chaperone and teach either a mentoring or college transition class.
     · Each satellite campus will have between 5-15 students

· Build and maintain a close relationship with student participants throughout the school year to facilitate the development of students’ cultural identity, college aspiration, and growth mindset.

· Teach assigned mentoring and college transition lessons along with the project staff to high school participants on Saturday mornings at one of the project’s satellite campuses (for a list, see below).

· Mentors will be trained on how to implement these lessons virtually in August/September and December/January. Then, throughout the program year, there will be about an hour of dry-run sessions with the project staff to practice the lessons that mentors will teach on Saturday.

· Meet with the project staff (via online, phone, text or video conference) to discuss updates about the program and students, how to accommodate students, etc.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Complete surveys at the beginning and the end of the program year.

· Participate in a focus group at the end of the program year.

· Complete consent forms, confidentiality agreement, and UH stipend award form(s).

COMPENSATION:

· $250 per month, totaling $2,750 per program as a stipend.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

· Undergraduate and graduate students or kūpuna who are from Oʻahu, Molokaʻi and Hawaiʻi islands

· Have a deep understanding about Native Hawaiian culture and values

· Familiar with college transition process

· Have experiences mentoring Native Hawaiian students with or without disabilities

· Have experiences managing groups of high school students
