About the Internship Site

Camp Pālehua is a puʻuhonua that deepens our understanding for the land (ʻaina) and awakens a desire for stewardship in our community and beyond. Our mission is to create unforgettable experiences in a unique mauka environment for the local community and visitors from around the world. We offer educational programs and activities in an effort to foster the next generation of stewards; events to network and expand collaboration opportunities in our community; and overnight accommodations in order for guests to build personal connections with the land. We are perched on the southern slopes of the Wai’anae mountains, nestled in a forest with commanding views of the southern and western coastline of O’ahu. We are committed to protecting the natural environment and cultural sites and restoring the native forest.

Meet Our Internship Mentor

Aloha, my name is Eva Hubbard. I have been the Director at Camp Pālehua here for 2 years now and have been with camp for 5 years total. I grew up in Nuʻuanu and currently live in Nānākuli and at Pālehua. A graduate of Punahou, Leeward Community College and UH West Oahu in Hawaiian-Pacific Studies. My background is also in Aircraft Maintenance and Property Management. Staff and I have a heart to share our goals with the next generation in caring for our land and being excellent stewards.

Internship duties and responsibilities

Students will learn to engage with community members by sharing this space in: Assisting with day – day operations; native outplanting and preservation work; help facilitate group and volunteer activities; engage with marketing, social media, and community outreach; assist other departments as needed.

Interns should be able to:

• Lift at least 25 lbs carrying tools and equipment
• Work outdoors in a mountainous environment
• Wear proper shoes/hiking boots, hats and sunscreen if needed, and safety equipment
• Follow all safety procedures, rules, and regulations on private property. A Waiver Form will be required by all participants.

Tentative 2024 Internship Schedule:

• Spring 2024: March 19th and 21st – 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
• Summer 2024: July 8th – 12th – 8:00am – 4:00 pm
  *Schedules are tentative and are subject to change. Interns will be required to work 8 hours in the Spring 2024. Interns will be required to work 40 hours in the Summer 2024.
