New Beginnings for English Language Learners (NB-ELL)

Teaching reading to a student; NBELL LOgo

Project Dates: 2011 – 2016

Funded by: US Department of Education – Office of English Language Instruction (OELA)

About

The New Beginnings for English Language Learners (NB-ELL) Project develops and provides high-quality professional development (PD) courses for K-12 teachers in the Hawaii DOE, American Samoa DOE, and Republic of the Marshall Islands MOE to improve ELL students’ reading and writing skills in science and math, and ultimately increase motivation and academic achievement. The NB-ELL courses are built on those of the earlier ELL-ACE Project (October 1, 2007 to September 30, 2013). NB-ELL courses help teachers (1) develop knowledge of linguistic, literacy, visual, meta-cognitive, technology, and other strategies to provide individualized, differentiated instruction to ELLs; (2) build their own cultural awareness of their students’ backgrounds to more effectively teach them; and (3) meet the CCSS, WIDA, and other standards.
